CSV Cleaner: how it works
How it works
- Open a UTF-8 CSV and read Doctor's nine checks, counts and affected row references. A reported issue is not changed just by opening the file.
- Preview a supported repair: trim leading or trailing whitespace in fields, remove repeated complete rows, or remove blank rows. Compare the proposed result before applying it.
- Apply one repair at a time, inspect the table, and undo if necessary. Save only when you are satisfied; the save report explains which records changed.
What stays exactly the same
Untouched records keep their bytes in Preserve output, except when removing the last row adjusts the new last row's terminator to match the original final-newline style. Trimmed records are reserialized; removed duplicate and blank rows disappear.
Doctor can report mixed line endings or formula-like text but does not repair them automatically. Formula risk is flagged, not silently rewritten.
Limits
Files are uploaded to the cellsmith.app server and held in memory, not kept only in your browser. The web version accepts UTF-8 text files up to 32 MiB each. Files expire 30 minutes after the last activity; opening another file or restarting the server also clears the current document and unsaved work.
Questions about this tool
Does it repair every CSV issue automatically?
No. Doctor reports nine categories. Whitespace trimming, complete-row duplicate removal and blank-row removal have supported repair actions today.
Can I see the effect before cleaning?
Yes. Each supported repair has a preview and can be undone after applying.
Does this remove blank rows?
Yes. Preview rows marked blank by Doctor, apply their removal as one step, or undo it.
