CELLSMITH / CSV TOOLS

CSV to Excel Converter

Open a CSV and download it as a real .xlsx file. Every cell stays text.

Files are kept for up to 30 minutes after your last activity. Unsaved edits cannot be recovered after a server restart.

Leading zeros such as 00123, long numbers such as 12345678901234567890 and ID-like values are written as text cells, so Excel shows them unchanged. This is a one-way export of values, not a full Excel editor.

How it works

  1. Open a UTF-8 CSV, TSV or TXT file with the button above, or drop it into the workbench. Check the detected delimiter and the row count in the file passport before exporting.
  2. Choose Prepare Excel file in the Convert and export panel. The report shows how many rows and columns will be written; every cell becomes a text cell.
  3. Download the .xlsx file. Your original CSV is not touched: the export is a new file and the workbench keeps no changes to undo.

What stays exactly the same

Every value is written as a text cell: 00123 stays 00123, 12345678901234567890 is not shortened, and 3/4 is not turned into a date. What Excel shows is what your CSV contains.

Export only reads your file. It does not change the document, and there is nothing to undo; the .xlsx is a new file and your CSV stays byte for byte as it was.

One Excel sheet holds at most 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. A CSV beyond either limit is refused with a clear message instead of being cut short; split it first, then export each part.

Limits

Files are uploaded to the cellsmith.app server and held in memory, not kept only in your browser. The web version accepts UTF-8 text files up to 32 MiB each. Files expire 30 minutes after the last activity; opening another file or restarting the server also clears the current document and unsaved work.

Questions about this tool

Will Excel convert my numbers?

No. Every cell is written as a text cell. Leading zeros (00123), long numbers (12345678901234567890) and ID-like values appear exactly as they are in the CSV.

Is this a full Excel replacement?

No. This is a one-way export of cell values to .xlsx. It creates no formulas or formatting, and cellsmith does not open .xlsx files. Your CSV stays the source of truth.

How many rows can I convert?

One Excel sheet holds at most 1,048,576 rows and 16,384 columns. A CSV beyond either limit is refused with a clear message rather than cut short or silently split into several sheets; use the CSV splitter first, then export each part.
