CSV Splitter

Split a CSV into smaller files by row count, then download every part as one ZIP.

Files are kept for up to 30 minutes after your last activity. Unsaved edits cannot be recovered after a server restart.

Choose how many rows go in each file. Every part can start with the header row, quoted fields that contain line breaks are never cut, and each row keeps its original bytes.

How it works

  1. Open a UTF-8 CSV, TSV or TXT file with the button above, or drop it into the workbench. The split panel opens once the file is loaded; look through the table first if you like.
  2. Enter the number of rows per file and keep "Header row in every file" on if the importer you are feeding needs one. Preview the split to see the number of files and the row range of each part.
  3. Download all parts as one ZIP named after your file. Each part is called your-file-part-001.csv, your-file-part-002.csv and so on. The web version makes at most 1,000 files per split.

What stays exactly the same

Parts are cut only between records, so a quoted field that contains a line break is never split in two. Each part carries the original byte-order mark, the header row's original bytes and the original bytes of its rows, including the line endings.

Put the parts back together, dropping the repeated headers, and you get the exported file byte for byte. The split does not change your document; there is nothing to undo.

Limits

Files are uploaded to the cellsmith.app server and held in memory, not kept only in your browser. The web version accepts UTF-8 text files up to 32 MiB each. Files expire 30 minutes after the last activity; opening another file or restarting the server also clears the current document and unsaved work.

Questions about this tool

How do I split a CSV file by number of rows?

Open the file, enter the number of rows per file in the split panel and preview the split. You see how many files it makes and which rows go in each one. Then download the ZIP.

Does every file get the header row?

Yes, by default. Turn the option off to put the header only in the first file. If no header row is detected in your file, the option is unavailable.

Will a row with line breaks inside quotes be cut in half?

No. Files are split only at record boundaries, so a quoted field that spans several lines stays whole.
